"I’ve never been partial to red hair. Maybe seeing my little brother, Nevin dressed up as Harry Potter’s friend Ron ruined it for me?
I dash to the master bedroom and find the in-suite bath, reach into the shower, grab the soap, and run back to the hall smack-dab into the Professor.
He startles and grabs my shoulders. I’m surprised by the resulting electric shock, but he steadies me and keeps himself from falling. Our faces are so close, our noses are nearly touching. My heart starts racing. I look up, and behind his dark-framed glasses, his eyes are deep green, not the brown I expect. They are mesmerizing. My warm breath fogs his glasses, but I can't turn away.
We stop and stare. He can't stop looking at my ordinary brown eyes either. Or is he still in shock from almost getting run over in his hall by a brown-haired, brown-eyed girl escaping his bedroom?
Maybe he felt the same electric shock I felt.”Maggie - about first meet up with James.

Book description

Maggie Jensen

Maggie Jensen quit her work in the mission field in Rwanda and moved home to her grandparents to take care of them. After they passed away, she took over their farmhouse and has lived there for the last three years. Years spent attempting to recover from burnout and sorrow but resulting in detachment from life around her.

She didn't know she needed a wake-up call until her neighbor James McPherson's living situation changed. Though neighbors for three years they've never gotten acquainted. Both James and Maggie kept to themselves but for different reasons. Maggie found James difficult to define by simply observing him. He appeared old because of his quirky apparel and habits but was close to her age.

Because of Maggie's inherent desire to help others, she ends up entwined in the goings-on next door. Getting to know James is a slow process, inhibited mainly by his insecurities and her reluctance to get involved.

When given the opportunity to date a teacher at the school where she is a secretary, she is over the moon but Maggie quickly learns there is no air on the moon as she lands solidly on earth again. Instead, she tries to be a witness and get her life straight with the Lord.

Just when Maggie and James seem to grow close a misunderstanding starts a chain reaction Maggie isn't sure they can recover from. Thanks to family and renewed faith in her Lord Maggie learns to aim for balance instead of falling in one or another ditch.

James McPherson

James McPherson is a busy man. He is the prolific author of history textbooks aimed to reach high school and college students. His life is monotonous yet comfortable until everything gets turned upside down.

If he was busy before he soon realizes he never really understood what that meant. James finds himself the caregiver of his deceased sister's twins as well as the sole support for her parents-in-law.

Thanks to the twins and their tendency to bother his neighbor, he interacts with Maggie Jensen for the first time in the three years they have been neighbors. He has always had one eye on the beauty next door and the other one buried in his research.

James is more than aware there can never be anything between them. The stigma of being an introverted history nerd is a part of his personality that he struggles with. Though he can't be in a relationship with Maggie he has no choice but to accept the help she is willing to give.
